ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

History of the Department of Sociology

The department of Sociology was established in July, 1969 in M.D.K.G. College, Dibrugarh,and classes were conducted in the old building then. Professor Mridula Bhattacharji was the founder teacher of the Department.

In 1971, Professor Sewali Barbara joined the department and since then remained as the Head of Department till her retirement in 30th November 2009. Permanent teachers who served the department for brief period and have either left or have joined other institutions included Deepa Buragohain, Dr. Bikash Deka and Dr. Phirmi Bodo.

The department began offering major courses since 1996, besides pass courses since its inception. It is a pride that this department has produced large numbers of academicians, educationists, welfare officers, businesswomen, entrepreneurs, sportspersons, artists, administrators, social activists, legal professionals and so on. The department has been producing good results and has organised state level, national level workshops and seminars besides other academic activities.

At present the department has three sanctioned posts and one non-sanctioned post. The department thus has three numbers of Assistant Professor Posts (sanctioned).

VISION OF THE DEPARTMENT

The vision of the Department is to provide quality oriented teaching that will bring out the potentialities of the students who will help create a better everyday life for many people, produce students with problem – solving skills and generations of social thinkers and committed citizens who shall strive to maintain a vibrant sustainable earth and also encourage research aptitude among them in a student- friendly, gender- sensitive, safe and motivating environment and imbibe values for love of Indian tradition , customs and cultures.

MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT

  • Promote the intellectual development of our students through sociological imagination, broader outlook to study and understand society in local, national and global context. Adapt to cognate disciplines and perspectives crucial for deeper and broader understanding of socio-cultural, socio-economic, socio-political, socio-psychological phenomena. Provide theoretical and methodological insights to students to analyse social phenomena and its dynamics. Introduce students to recent developments concerning sociological theory along with current debates and research in the globe. Conduct field studies to provide knowledge with praxis.

Welcome to the Department of Sociology!

The Department was established in 1969 and has grown steadily over the years and now is  one of the largest departments of the college. We have large no of students spread over  with honors/major and generic elective/ pass course subject and skill enhancement course. We have at present four faculty members.

Sociology is the systematic study of human social interactions making analysis of social phenomena in the most exciting way and offering a scientific approach to the understanding of human behaviour in societal settings. It examines social interactions, social relationships, social institutions and also their consequences.  Through the use of various concepts, theories, research methods it provides for a sociological understanding and sociological perspective of the many aspects of society and social pathology.

Its subject matter is broad and has numerous sub-disciplines that focus on family, religion, culture, crime, health and illness, development, gender, kinship, law, science and knowledge, communication, psychology, industry, demography, urbanization, globalization, work and organization, ethnicity and so on.

Sociology equips students with scientific insights and knowledge, develops analytical minds and research aptitudes and skills for personal intellectual development and also for scientific understanding of human societies.

The Department trains students at undergraduate (B.A) level and thus students have a  range of career option in teaching , research, civil services, governmental and non-governmental organization , industrial organizations and development organizations.

Some of our main areas of specialization include Gender Studies, Sociology of Health and Illness, Rural and Urban Sociology, Sociology of Work, Economic Sociology, Social Stratification, Sociology of Kinship, Social stratification, criminology and so on.

Some significant achievements of the Department include several published research studies on social issues, completion of research projects and organization of workshops and seminars of national standards/levels. The Department is leading the way of higher studies and providing alumni playing crucial roles in national and international life.

ACHIEVEMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT

A. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

                          

  • Students from the department take active participation in the extra and co curricular activities organised by the NSS & NCC Cell.
  • Students also take active participation in other events organised by the college like Youth Conclave, Annual College Week etc.
  • Students also take participation in the Career Counseling Programmes as and when organised by the Career Counseling Cell of the college.
  • Students’ participation is seen in other events organised by the different committees like Alumni Association, Gender Sensitization Cell, Students’ Union etc.
  • Students’ actively participated in outreach programmes organised by the college under UBA

Every year, the students bring accolades to the department by their participation in the Annual College Week in group and individual events including Wall Magazine competition, Cultural Procession, Group Dance, Drama, Music, Dance, Rangoli, Mehendi, Article writing, Essay, Indoor and Outdoor games, etc.

ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

 Organizing Seminars/Workshops/Symposium/Events and celebration of festivals:        A National Seminar on Use of Scientific Technologies in Social Sciences, jointly organized by Sociology and Political Science Department on 13th and 14th October ,2017 sponsored by commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology, Ministry of HRD, Higher Education Department, Government of India.

Symposium on “Sociology of Today: A Trend “ was organized in 31st August 2007.

Symposium on “Sociology of Industry and Society” was organized in 4th December 2002.

Refresher Course in Sociology was organized on 27th June 2003 to 11 th July 2003 sponsored by Higher Education Council, Guwahati.

Felicitation of  Krishnangi Dutta for being the topper in B.A. final examination,2017on 11/09/2019 by the department .

Organised a qiuzz competition on 26/03/2014 in the department.

Initiated a lecture on the topic “Relevance of Sociology as a Discipline” given by Professror G. Ram, Department of Sociology, Assam University, Silchar on 13/3/2014.

Delivered a lecture by Dr. Phirmi Bodo on the topic “Career Opportunities in Sociology” on 28th May 2016

Delivered a lecture by Mr. Plabon Phukan, Councellor, TISS, Guwahati on the topic of
“Personality Development and Character Building” on 19th August 2017.

National Workshop on ‘The Future of Sociology” Organized by Sociology Department in collaboration with Research Committee 15 of Indian Sociological Society on 20th and 21st   2018 , sponsored by UGC.

  • A talk was organised for students. The talk was given by one of the Teacher of “Art of living”(AOL) named Juil Mahanta. The programme was held in the month of September 2019 in Sociology Department.
  • A special class was conducted for first semester (CBCS) Honours student keeping in view the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. One of the Unit of Core 1 paper was taken by Dr.Rizia Begum Laskar. Assistant Professor English Department titled “Politically correct Bed Time Stories”. The class was taken in the month of September 2019.

An educational trip was organized for the students of 6thsemester (M) on 29/02/2020 to Pasighat. About 45 students went along with the teachers of the Department.

A talk show was organised on 13th February 2020 in Sociology Department. The topic of the lecture was “Social structure in NE India: A New perspective”. Dr. Sanjeeb Goswami, An Adjunct Professor (University of Science and Technology) was invited as a Resource person.

  • A programme (online) was held on 4th January 2021 at 5.30 P.M at Google meet on the topic of “Career prospects in Sports Sociology”. Speaker was Dr .Sanjay Tewary, Managing committee member of Indian Sociological Society, founder of sports Sociology RC group and president of Uttar Pradesh Athletic Association. A total number of 110 participants were present.
  • A programme was held (online) on 26th January 2021 at 3.30 P.M on the topic “ Sociology for Journalism”. The speaker was Kanchanjyoti Gohain, Young Journalist with vast knowledge in Print Electronic and Social media.
  • A programme was held on 28/01/2021 at 5 P.M via Google meet on the topic Digital media Literacy. Speaker was Manushi, Indian Institute of Mass communication, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt of India.
  • A programme was held on 29/01/2021 at 12 P.M on the topic Cuisine : Replica of Socio-cultural Life of people. The speaker was Soma Banerjee, NMS Mahavidyalaya, Murshidabad , West Bengal.
  • On 9th October, 2021 a Career Consultancy programme was organised Department of Sociology, MDKG College to make students aware of the career options that are being available after graduation. The resource person was Dipankar Sarmah, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, MDKG College.

    A Lecture series and Interactive session was held on 16th December, 2021 at Room no.1 on the topic(s) “The Coming Crisis in Western Sociology- Methodological Approach’ and A Critique to Conventional Sociology: Reflexivity”. The resource person was DrBikash Deka, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Dibrugarh University.                                                                                    n 15th June, 2022 a felicitation programme was organized by the Department of Sociology to felicitate ShaineeSonowal and Sushmita Deori for their outstanding performance for Karate and Taekwondo respectively.

    A prize distribution ceremony was held on 6th May,2023 in room no. 1 to distribute the prizes of Essay Competition held on 20th February, 2023.

    An Extension Activity on “Awareness of Career Options” was organised by the Department of Sociology, MDKG College on 11th May, 2023 at Santipara Bengali High School, Dibrugarh with the class 9th and 10th students at 11 am in the school auditorium in the presence of a few teachers and the Head Mistress. The Speaker was Mr. Dipankar Sarmah, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, MDKG College.
